Does wheatgrass have gluten?
Wheatgrass is an incredibly nutritious and versatile health food that is very popular. But many gluten free people, myself included, questioned is wheatgrass gluten free?
What is Wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass is a type of grass that is harvested from the common wheat plant before it has matured. It is usually used as a dietary supplement.
Wheatgrass is incredibly nutrient-dense, containing high levels of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.
It is usually consumed in its fresh juice form, or dried and ground into a powder for easy use in smoothies and other recipes.
Wheatgrass Ingredients
The main ingredient and only ingredient in wheatgrass is baby wheat; before it has fully matured.
Wheatgrass also contains a host of other nutrients, including vitamins A, C, E, and K, magnesium, zinc, iron, and calcium.
How is Wheatgrass Grown?
Wheatgrass is usually grown in soil in trays and is harvested once it reaches a certain height. It is then washed and juiced, or dried and ground into a powder.
When wheatgrass is juiced, the pulp is separated from the juice, which is then consumed or stored for later use.
Is Wheatgrass Gluten Free?
The short answer is yes, wheatgrass is gluten free. Since wheatgrass is harvested before the grain has had a chance to fully mature, meaning that it does not contain the same gluten content as wheat grain.
Is wheatgrass safe for celiacs?
Wheatgrass was confirmed to be devoid of gluten proteins as measured by specific antibody binding. Wheatgrass contains no gluten and is safe to eat/drink for anyone with celiac disease or other gluten-sensitivity disorders. (Source)
Overall, wheatgrass is a nutritious and versatile health food that is naturally gluten free. It is high in vitamins and minerals, and can be enjoyed in its fresh juice form or dried and ground into a powder.
