Are chips gluten free?
Are you looking for gluten free snacks to munch on? Are you wondering are potato chips gluten free?
Potato chips are a snack that has stood the test of time, offering the best combination of crunch, flavor, and saltiness.
Potato chips used to be one of my favorite movie snacks. I loved dipping ruffled potato chips into a big bowl of sour cream and onion dip! It was the best.
What are potato chips?
Potato chips are thin slices of potatoes that are deep-fried or baked until they become crispy and crunchy. They are a popular snack choice because of their deepfried goodness!
They come in a variety of flavors from the classic salted potato chips to unique and bold seasonings like ketchup.
We’ll answer, do potato chips have gluten?

How are potato chips made in a factory?
The process of making potato chips in a factory involves several steps:
- Selection and washing: Potatoes are carefully chosen for their quality, then washed to remove any dirt or debris.
- Peeling and slicing: Specialized machinery peels the potatoes, followed by slicing them into thin, uniform slices. The thickness of the slices can vary depending on the desired texture of the chips.
- Washing and blanching: The potato slices are thoroughly washed to eliminate excess starch. They are then blanched in hot water or steam for a short period, partially cooking them and preparing them for frying.
- Frying: The blanched potato slices are deep-fried in hot oil until they turn golden and crispy. The frying process takes only a few minutes. After frying, the chips are drained to remove excess oil.
- Seasoning: Once the chips are fried and drained, they are immediately seasoned with salt or other desired flavorings. This can be done through a seasoning drum, ensuring an even distribution of the seasoning.
- Packaging: Finally, the seasoned chips are packaged in bags or containers.
Are potato chips gluten free?
Plain potato chips made with only potatoes, oil, and salt are generally gluten free.
However, it’s crucial to check the packaging and ingredients to confirm if a specific brand or flavor of potato chips is gluten free and look to see if the ingredient label mentions possible cross-contamination.
Flavored varieties of potato chips may contain gluten-based ingredients such as wheat, barley, or malt vinegar.
Are all potato chips gluten free?
No, not all potato chips are gluten free. Some potato chips have malt vinegar in their ingredients or other gluten-containing ingredients. Some chips may be made in facilities where there is possible gluten cross-contamination.
